Aristotle studied with Plato twenty years. His writings show that he must have carried in his head or in notebooks an exhaustive index of the Platonic dialogues. There are few sentences and almost no pages in Aristotle that can be fully understood without reference to the specific passages on Plato of which he was thinking as he wrote. And as no medieval Aristotelian could know Plato, and few modern Aristotelians have the patience to know him intimately, Aristotelians as a class only half understand their author.
