Over the Door
On Saturday mornings Rachel and Deborah come over to our apartment to have worthwhile discussions. It started two Januaries ago when we got together to read Aristotle’s poetics and from there Sophocles, then Plato and other things followed. I quit for a while and then returned for Eliot’s plays and some Shakespeare. We recently did all Eliot’s long poems, having finished Little Gidding this last time.
We found the following words from the end of the first section very apt. We thought if we ever build a church these words would be over the doors leading into the vestibule:
You are not here to verify,
Instruct yourself, or inform curiosity
Or carry report.
And these words would be over the doors leading into the sactuary:
You are here to kneel
Where prayer has been valid.

An Account
I ought to spend time telling the tale of the days and hours of my life in the months of September and October, in the year of our Lord, 2006 carefully. Perhaps one day I will. I remember thinking, early last week that I had come between the upper and the nether millstone, and would fain have found some greater space.
